National Defense Academy or NDA is the primary Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where the cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together, before they go to service academies respectively and further advance training. NDA is located in Hadaquasala near Pune, Maharashtra. This is the first academy for a trio in the world.
NDA graduates have led and fought in every major conflict where Indian armed forces have been called into action since the academy was founded. The graduates include 3 recipients of Prem VIR chakra and 12 Ashoka chakras. The National Security Academy has produced 27 service chiefs to date. The current Chiefs of Staff of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force are all graduates of the NDA.
NDA has a full-time residential undergraduate courses. After three years of study, the students receive a Bachelor’s degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). Students can choose between two types of course modules. The Science stream Cadets are taught in physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science. The School of Humanities and Arts offers research in history, economics, political science, geography and language.
All cadets who joined NDA after 10 + 2 Exams are trained at the Academy for three years and culminating in a graduate study at the Jawaharlal Nehru University at BA / BSc or BC (Computer Science). In addition to academic training, they are also trained in outdoor skills such as drills, PTs and games; except one of the foreign languages to lower level B1 (according to international standards). Emphasis on NDA is on building character, esprit-de-corps, mental and physical robustness, leadership, and feeling sharp observation. The life of the NDA is all about learning the discipline and adhering to self improvement.
NDA has an excellent infrastructure for all-round training of cadets and a vast array of facilities like spacious and well-maintained classrooms, well-equipped labs, two Olympic size swimming pools, a gymnasium, 32 football fields, 2 polo grounds, a cricket stadium and a number of squash and tennis courts. The academic year is divided into two terms, viz. Spring (Jan. to May) and Autumn (July to Dec.). A cadet must undergo training for a total of six terms before graduating from the NDA.
