Nation is celebrates January 15 as Army day every year. This year on January 15, 2020 India will be celebrating its 72nd Army Day. On this day the Indian Army command headquarters in the national capital, as well as in other parts of the country, celebrate the occasion by organizing military parades and shows of strength. Indian Army also displays their arsenal of weapons on this day. Army Day also honours soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the country. Bravery awards like unit credentials and Sena Medals are also distributed on this day.
Why is Indian Army Day celebrated on January 15?
Army Day signifies the transfer of power from the British to India, an important moment in the Indian history. Indian Army was officially established on April 1, 1895 when India was under the British rule. After independence, on January 15, 1949 – the Indian army got its first Indian chief when Lt Gen K M Carriappa took over as commander-in-chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander-in-chief of India.
What is Special about India’s 72nd Army Day?
India’s 72nd Army day is significant because this year the Army Day Parade, for the first time, will be led by a woman officer. Captain Tania Shergill from corps of signals, a fourth generation army officer will lead the parade today. She was commissioned in Indian army through Officers Training Institute (OTA) in 2017.
About Indian Army
India has the second largest army in the world with 1.4 million active military personnel. The army operates six operational commands and one training command. Each command is headed by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief with the rank of lieutenant general. There is also the Army Training Command abbreviated as ARTRAC.
